Music Distribution on the Web: Create Buzz, Sell CDs!
Introduction to Online Music Distribution
GarageBand Review Review
by David Nevue, The
Music Biz Academy Author
of How
to Promote Your Music on the
Internet.
If
you're a member of great band,
and I mean a great band,
GarageBand
might be able to get you some
fantastic exposure. Supported
by such well known producers
as George Martin (The Beatles)
and Jerry Harrison (Talking
Heads), GarageBand puts the
success of member artists (membership
is free) in the hands of music
fans and listeners.
GarageBand
invites musicians to submit
their music to the site, where
it will be reviewed and rated
by listeners, loyal users, and
other musicians. The review
process, which involves a “comparative
ranking algorithm,” is designed
to eliminate bias. Songs that
receive the highest ratings
by listeners climb the GarageBand
charts. It's as simple as that.
If your song does well, you
may have the opportunity to
have your song included on a
GarageBand ‘Evolved'
sampler CD, which goes out to
subscribers every three months.
The highest rated songs also
get radio play on Yahoo's LAUNCHcast
station and are included on
Yahoo's playlist right alongside
popular artists. Finally, your
song, if highly rated, gets
exposure to GarageBand's advisory
board of music industry professionals.
GarageBand
has received some major attention
in the industry. 26 GarageBand
members were finalists in the
New Music category for the 2003
American Music Awards, and
the final winner performed live
during the awards show on January
13th, 2003. Twelve GarageBand
artists have been signed to
major label deals.
In
addition to the exposure opportunities
inherent in the system, you
receive constant feedback on
your songs from objective reviewers,
your own GarageBand artist page,
free gig promotion to fans,
and you can sell your CDs (the
GarageBand shopping cart is
provided by CD
Baby) directly from the
site.
GarageBand
has the backing and support
most independent web sites only
dream of. A definite must for
serious musicians seeking the
opportunity to be heard.
